RENTERS’ RIGHTS BILL

The Renters’ Rights Bill will have its first reading in the House of Commons today (11 September 2024) aimed at giving tenants greater protection

The main reform is a ban on no fault (Section 21) evictions, this having been repeatedly delayed by the previous Conservative government.

The Bill will also :-

  • give tenants the right to request a pet and to challenge rent increases
  • introduce new laws to end rental “bidding wars” by landlords and letting agents
  • expand Awaab’s law (named after the child who died following exposure to mould) requiring landlords to fix hazards within a certain timeframe

New clear and expanded rights would also be given to landlords to reclaim possession of their properties when they need to
