QUIT TOK – HOW SHOULD EMPLOYERS RESPOND?

One of the latest trends amongst younger workers  is to covertly film meetings at which they resign or are dismissed and then post them on TikTok or other social media platforrms, achieving thousands of views. There is a risk that other meetings eg grievance or disciplinary could also be likewise filmed.

To avoid this employers should:

  • Hold formal meetings face to face rather than remotely  (thus making it extremely difficult to covertly film)
  • Explain at the start of any formal meeting that no recoding is permitted without consent and ask for confirmation that the employee is not recording
  • If an audio recording is requested the employer should offer to record the meeting themselves.
  • Include covertly recording formal meetings in your list of gross misconduct offences
  • Circulate a clear social media policy
