Employers Beware of “Mouse Movers”

An American bank has dismissed more than a dozen employees for using “mouse movers” on their work PC.

A “mouse mover” is a small devices placed under a mouse to keep the cursor active  by moving the mouse autonomously.  This would mean a remote worker could leave their desk for hours without being detected as their work PC will not be put into “inactive” mode and will not show as “away” on MS Teams etc.

If you are concerned about the use of mouse movers make it clear to staff that their use is prohibited in the work place, including when working from home, and that any employee found to be using one will face disciplinary action.

To deter the use of these devices/apps prevent staff from downloading unauthorised software or attaching unauthorised USB drives and require employees to respond to messages or calls within a specified time frame.
