Considering a Recruitment Freeze?
Wage bills are likely to rise significantly from April 2025 due to the increases in employers’ National Insurance Contributions and the minimum wage rates.
This may result in employers considering a recruitment freeze (a temporary stop in hiring new employees) as a way of reducing costs.
Whilst this does not in itself have employment law implications the decision to implement a recruitment freeze should be communicated to employees together with the reasoning behind the decision, how long it is likely to last and circumstances when recruitment may still take place.
A blanket freeze is best avoided as some key roles may still need to be filled after the current employee has left.
Regular reviews of the necessity for the freeze should take place and there should be a plan for returning to usual hiring practices. Care should be taken to ensure that the freeze does not result in staff having excessive workloads.
